FSV Mainz will kick off their campaign in Bundesliga with a trip to Bochum on this weekend.
After spending more than a decade in 2. Bundesliga, Bochum finally earned a promotion to the top flight in the last season. Playing in the prestigious league for the first time since 2009-10, Bochum put up a great performance under the mentorship of coach Thomas Reis, finishing 13th on the points table. They also managed to reach the quarterfinals of the DFB Pokal, before bowing down to Freiburg.
The club seems to have carried forward its form in the pre-season friendlies, losing just 2 of 9 such matches. Bochum played its most recent match against Viktoria Berlin in the first round of DFB Pokal. Simon Zoller, Takuma Asano, and new signing Philipp Hofmann scored a goal each, thrashing the hosts 3-0. Bochum has been quite busy in the transfer market, letting go of players like Armel Bella-Kotchap and Maxim Leitsch.
However, the new inclusions in the form of Philipp Forster, Konstantinos Stafylidis, and Hofmann are likely to have a positive impact on its performance this season.
Mainz put up its best performance since the 2015-16 season, finishing 8th on the points table. Had the club not stuttered in the middle third of the season, they had a real shot at finishing within the top 7 and aiming for a European finish. Playing his second full season as the head coach of Mainz, Bo Svensson will definitely aim for a better result this time around.
During the pre-season transfers, Moussa Niakhate and Jeremiah St. Juste have been two high-profile exits from the club. The management has brought in Maxim Leitsch to strengthen the rearguard, and Marcus Ingvarsten as well as Angelo Fulgini, to bring some more teeth to the attack. Talking about the recent form, Mainz is undefeated in its last two friendlies and won its most recent match 3-0 against Erzgebirge in the first round of DFB Pokal.
Fans will be hoping that the team carries forward its form in the Bundesliga too.
Match prediction and football betting tips for VfL Bochum vs FSV Mainz Bundesliga 20222-23. The match is going to be played at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion, Bochum, on 6th August 2022.
The home team is likely to play without Danilo Soares, Jacek Goralski, and Jannes Horn, all of whom are suffering from injuries. Thomas Reis is likely to start with a 4-2-3-1 formation for this match.
As for the visitors, Danny da Costa is likely to miss out on this match due to an injury, leaving skipper Silvan Widmer to protect the right flank. However, that is the sole worry for Svensson at this stage.
Given the current form of both the clubs, as well as the bench strength, there is little separating both the teams.
Bet on a draw.
Bochum has kept just 2 clean sheets in it’s last 12 home games, while Mainz has failed to do so in any of it’s last 15 away matches. We are therefore recommending a BTTS bet.
Total Goals Over/Under
Under 2.5 Goals @ 1.85
Each of the last 2 top flight games between the two clubs in the previous season saw a score lower than 2.5. Bochum scored just 38 goals last season, the least among non-relegated teams, while Mainz scored 50, the least among top 10 teams. We are therefore predicting a low-scoring encounter this Saturday.
